It looks like any car browsing I do for awhile is just going to be self-torture. I talked to my dad about the 540, and he told me I should really keep the 4Runner ‘til college, when I can have twice the budget I do now. He’s not outright forbidding me from getting something else, but he really doesn’t want me to right now. So that leaves the options of a good camera (e.g. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! or !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ) or an !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Watch Dogs 2 and Forza Horizon 3 really make me want to go for the Xbox, but I also want to start taking better pictures more often. I’m sad I can’t get a new car, but I’m gonna try to enjoy the year and a half I’ve got left with the 4Runner. Camera or Xbox? What do you do?

I plan on getting something that’ll last me past college. Project car budget maybe, but I’ve got a little less than six years to worry about the end of college.

I really really wanted a BMW when I was in high school, but I was stuck driving around in a 1997 Ford Explorer Sport. So I saved pretty much all the money I made at my high school job. I had about 6k saved up when I graduated from high school, enough for a beater BMW; however, my dad really wasn’t going to allow me to get one. He was like you can get a nicer one than you’d be able to get now once you’ve finished school. I also didn’t have a car at school since parking was $800/year. In hindsight, this was the correct way to do things, I didn’t get some worn out E36 325i, I got an E90 M3. It sucks now, but your budget will be a lot bigger in the future.

If you’re serious about wanting to become a better photographer, go with the camera. Otherwise your free time will probably get eaten up by the Xbox. That said, having been through college for a civil engineering degree while wanting to play videogames and be an Oppo, I highly do suggest you make a choice because you can’t have both when there’re exams, homework, and projects to be done in addition to being an automotive enthusiast.

My ~$10,000 post-HS car budget leaves me conflicted - something super awesome E39 M5 (which are getting surprisingly cheap) or something less awesome but more reliable like a V8 Genesis or a super nice LS430. I fully plan on taking a car to college though, so I’m thinking a G8 GXP/GT or something else kind of in the middle of that spectrum.

If you really want the car, skip the camera/Xbox.

If you can’t resist the immediate purchase, I think the camera is a better idea. A good one should last you a long time and it’s nice to learn something that may prove to be useful. This is coming from a gamer who would otherwise support the Xbox purchase (although I think building a PC would be cooler).

I DO NOT plan on majoring in photography or anything, but I enjoy it and maybe it could be a nice little sideline. On the other hand, I enjoy video games but I’m stuck with a 360.

My two cents, (and probably not what you want to hear,) but video game consoles only sucks up large chunks of your valuable time with absolutely no pay off. The ROI is sh!t. Canon just came out with a nice 80d - gets you out of the house, builds a heck of a portfolio, and you will have something to show for it.

(Ok, done - now get off my lawn.)

Good luck finding a GXP at that price. A 10k M5 is still going to cost a lot to maintain, if your parents are paying for the maintenance, go for it.

What do your parents have? I got a 2012 RAV4 Limited that my mom has driven for four years, and it’ll be my vehicle through college and beyond.

I say this as probably the best option. If it’s a 2010+, it’s newer, more reliable, paid off, and your parents can buy themselves something new, like a 2017 Camry even. My mom has a 2016 CR-V EX now.

Yeah, I’ve learned that the hard way, but sometimes it’s nice to sit down and drive cars you’ll never really get to. On the other hand, it’s also nice to get out and shoot. However, the 80D is waaaaaay out of budget, and what do you mean ROI?

I say get the camera and keep rocking the 360 provided it doesn’t RRoD on you. I ended up selling mine because it was being too much of a distraction and I used the money to buy more Miata parts.

“return on investment.” with a game console there is none. With a good camera, if you’re inclined to be a photographer then there’s always the opportunity to use it to make money, even if only on the side.

It’s strange: they’re extremely patriotic Reagan-lovers, but they both drive Korean cars. Dad has a ‘14 Kia Cadenza and Mom has a ‘15 Santa Fe. Both great cars though. That’s what my dad did for my brother, but with a 10-year-old(at the time) F150. I like both the cars, especially the Cadenza, but they’re not really what I’m looking for. Plus, my dad has already said he wouldn’t be giving me the Cadenza, but he would buy me something for ~$10k since that’s what the F150 was worth when my brother got it.

It’s a shame, really. Cadenzas are actually fantastic values. And no on the Santa Fe. Even if my parents were willing to part with it, 1) it’s just the FWD one, 2) HELL NO I’M NOT GONNA BE AN UBER DRIVER, 3) It’s not a remotely fun experience. The 4Runner at least has that going for it.

Not sure, I had one of the last first-gen 360 Elites in white. Mine started acting up after about 4 years of good use. Supposedly the 360 S is a lot better designed to handle the intense heat loads it creates.

Camera. Get the camera.

If those are your only two options, go for Nikon. I think it’s more bang for the buck. Even though it’s on Craigslist, it looks good. It’s got the box and all the accessories.

The D3200 is a solid camera. The sensor is really good. And that’a a good price for everything.

Don’t spend that much on an Xbox one. I just got a complete one for 100 and I think it was a good purchase, but only because how cheap I got it. wait until it’s cheaper and updated more. the OS is incredibly slow. at first I thought it was my isp, but then I recalled when I played my dad’s it was the same way. I still mostly prefer my 360. The only reason, imo, to buy an Xbox one now is because of the games available and there aren’t that many that I’m interested in, yet.

The Nikon D3300 is a great camera as well - I was given one as a gift last year by family and I’ve not had the chance to properly get to grips with it, but it takes some very nice photos and is very well put together!
